Remember a while back when I said I’d been looking into web design and working with PHP and JS?
Don’t panic; there isn’t going to be a quiz or anything. But I did take a couple of online courses. I won’t call myself anything more than a novice, but I did create my own WordPress Theme for this site. You’re looking at it now. It’s powering the site. Not bad, huh?
I had been dissatisfied with the available themes out there, because they wouldn’t let me do as much tweaking as I wanted to do. I wanted to define my own color scheme, use my own background images, and make the site look like mine.
I still like looking around for themes. I now know how to peek under the hood and figure out how certain things work. I can borrow code from other themes (They’re all published under a GPL that grants anyone permission to use and modify source code, so there’s nothing untoward about it) and adapt things to my use.
[Update:] Naturally, as soon as I published this, I found a few errors, which I hope I’ve fixed. In the process, I’ve learned a bit more about working under the hood, so I guess that’s a plus.
